What is Keratin Powder?
The keratin peptide chain is a multi-domain peptide chain, which is divided into a highly retained rod-shaped middle region and a telopeptide region. The peptide chain of the rod-like domain has a periodic sequence structure of 8 peptide repeats. All intermediate fibril eggs have similar peptide chain structures. The keratin peptide chain is a typical α-helix. The heterogeneous complex helix formed by the combination of acidic and basic keratin peptide chains is the characteristic conformation form of keratin.
More than 20 types of keratin peptide chains have been discovered. Hair keratin and epidermal keratin are composed of different keratin peptide chains. Keratin contains high levels of cysteine, and the cross-linking of cysteine is the main cross-linking structure of keratin. The physical and chemical properties of keratin are mainly related to this cross-linking structure.
Because keratin contains a lot of cystine, it has a particularly high content of disulfide bonds, which play a cross-linking role in the protein peptide chain. Therefore, keratin has particularly stable chemical properties and high mechanical strength. They are less soluble and digestible, contain more cystine (14-15%), and have a higher nitrogen content (21-24.5%). The digestibility of crushed feathers and pig hair can be increased to 70-80% and the cystine content is reduced by 5-6% when heated under 15-20 pounds of steam pressure for one hour.

What is the role of Keratin?
1. Feed and food industry
Feather keratin can be used as high-quality feed protein. Keratin can also be used to produce amino acid trace element chelators, which can react with trace metal ions necessary for the growth of livestock and poultry to form coordination compounds with a cyclic structure, improving the utilization of trace elements. Feather keratin is also rich in glutamic acid, aspartic acid and other umami amino acids, which can be used to make new food additives for use in the food processing industry.
2. Pharmaceuticals
Research has found that some skin diseases are caused by keratinase produced by fungi that penetrates the skin. This characteristic can be used to develop drugs to treat fungal skin diseases. The compound keratin amino acid solution can be directly injected into the human body to supplement nutrition and replace part of human plasma. The cystine in keratin has a liver-protective effect and can effectively prevent fatty liver, cirrhosis and other liver diseases. 3. Fertilizers, pesticides and environmental protection
The processed feather meal contains up to about 5% nitrogen source, which can be used to produce liquid amino acid compound fertilizer as a substitute for animal manure and become a cheaper fertilizer.
Amino acids and their derivatives and metal complexes produced by hydrolysis of keratin have the dual effects of sterilizing and preventing diseases and stimulating growth of crops, and can be used as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides and plant growth promoters. Hydrolyze feathers to prepare complex amino acids, and react with calcium carbonate to prepare complex amino acid calcium compounds. 4. Tannery industry
